Character Information
Character Name: MacKenzie “Kenzi” Malikov
Canon: Lost Girl
Canon Point: End of Season 4
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Dead
History: boop
Personality:

Kenzi is a ball of energy wrapped in an enigma, shrouded in mystery and topped off with vodka. Really, very little is known about Kenzi save for what she tells people and even that is left up to debate. While she doesn’t reveal a lot about her past, Kenzi is openly a bright and excitable person. She enjoys having fun with friends, going out for parties and generally just being happy. She does what pleases her and what is required to keep that lifestyle going.

She has seen a lot of horrible things in her life and has had an admittedly abusive childhood at the temperament of her step-father, which drove her to run away at 15 and survive on the streets. She learned how to steal, where to sleep, how to con, who to make friends with and who to avoid in her years as a delinquent. When she meets Bo she states that “Mama always told me to make friends with the biggest, toughest kid on the playground” and that is her main motivation for starting a friendship with Bo and living with her. It develops into something deeper and more loving than that but she doesn’t mince words with Bo about being in it for protection initially.

Kenzi manages to be still such a personality through her admittedly hard life by being incredibly adaptable. She takes the world of the Fae in stride, even when she comes into contact with things that terrify her and attempt to eat or kill her. She fully admits it is a strange, unwelcoming world but keeps defying expectations set for her by Fae. In fact, many Fae respect her (even if they want to eat her), finding her moxy impressive for a human. She has a charisma that many either appreciate or find bizarre. Kenzi has an innate ability to blend into different social groups, from sorority sisters, to infiltrating a country club as an immigrant waitress, to juveniles in a correctional facility - she can seem like she belongs for however long of a time is necessary.

The one group she always had trouble blending into, however, is the Fae. At one point, due to the overwhelming amount of discrimination and potential flaying alive that being human in a fae world brought - Kenzi turned to a druid of some note to turn her into a Fae but instead, he gave her temporary, flashy “spark extract” powers. Literally firework powers. As a result she had to start stealing from her friends to keep the installments going, payment for which kept increasing at the druid’s fancy.

Kenzi doesn’t have many relationships that aren’t superficial in nature but the ones she has that mean something are lifelong friendships and loves. She will do a lot to help those she cares about; going as far as hurting them to help them in the end. Her boyfriend as of Nate was at risk of being exposed to the world of the Fae in a less-than-safe-way and Kenzi, instead of allowing him to be hurt, breaks up with him and sends him away from her for his benefit despite the effect it has on her. When Dyson gives up his love for Bo to a creature called the Norn to save her life, it leaves him as half a person and in the long run it hurts him. Kenzi, knowing this, goes to the Norn (a very powerful, very old Fae) and brandishes a chainsaw at her threatening to cut down the tree that is the lifesource of the Norn if she doesn't give Dyson back his love. Doing this is incredibly dangerous and could have ended in her death, but Kenzi does so anyways. She risks her life for her friends constantly in a world where she is not only considered a second class citizen but also dinner.

In S04 she and Hale began seeing each other, and had been going between engaged and not, something which took a great deal of coaxing on Hale’s part because Kenzi was so afraid of losing him, someone she cared about. In the end she said yes and her greatest fear happened, resulting in Hale dying and Kenzi losing what she had just started to become accustomed to loving.

At the end of S04, Kenzi made the ultimate sacrifice and, discovering that she was the key to stopping the basic end of the world, decided that she would walk through a gate to Hel - because she knew that dying in battle would earn her a ticket to Valhalla, and Bo would never stop looking for a way to bring her back. The temptation of seeing Hale again, because he died protecting her, was also a factor in choosing death to save her friends.

She isn’t completely defenseless though, armed with a sharp tongue and a quick brain, her skill with words has gotten her out of more than a few jams with Fae. Kenzi is at a near-constant level of 100% sarcasm and uses it and her appearance as a means of defending herself in both the human and Fae world. She also manipulates people into doing what she wants more often than not, finding it easier to go right for the jugular instead of attempting to appease to their better judgement. She will play the card of a helpless girl if it means getting her out of trouble but usually Kenzi appears to be stand-offish and uninterested in what people have to say to her, believing that everyone is trying to sell you something.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

abilities
Theft - Kenzi has been a professional thief and grifter since she was a young girl living on the streets and as such her abilities in pick-pocketing and racketeering are pretty impressive - on a realistic level, for a human - she is continuously shown to be operating some kind of scheme to make money, even Bo's investigation service originally started out as such. Her sleight of hand has also proven useful when needing to lift things for investigations - and when she needs to make a little cash. As of S04E07, "La Fae Époque" Kenzi has begun training as a "Shadow Thief" under one of her best, and oldest (literally), friends: Dyson, which improved her abilities to the extent that she could remove someone's underwear without them noticing.

strengths
caring, loyal friend - Kenzi doesn’t care about many people but the ones who have her loyalty will never lose it even if she is holding a grudge. She often prioritizes their well being over everything else; whenever Bo is in a funk or upset Kenzi will pull out all the stops in an effort to make her feel better. After Bo and Dyson broke it off for the first time, Kenzi took Bo out to smash car windows in and took her out drinking to forget being dumped. Her loyalty is something that cannot be bought, or sold. Anyone that crosses her friends or incurs their anger will also earn her own hard feelings.

inventive - In her early high-school years, Kenzi ran away from home and discontinued her educational career but before this happened, she allegedly invented a code language for cheat papers. She is also an extremely quick thinker, able to create personas and cons that are not only realistic but believable. She has an impressive rap sheet, but as far as screen time goes has yet to be caught in the middle of a con.

scientific - Although Kenzi may have never completed high-school she has an amazing ability to deconstruct languages and invent code (as stated above). In the Season 2 finale, the group is forced to face a creature called the Garuda - a being that feeds off of Fae and is a danger to their existence. A character on the show was attempting to crack the Garuda’s language to glean it’s location but was kidnapped before he could complete his study of it. Kenzi takes it upon herself to crack the dead pre-Fae language and does so within a few hours. The notes left by the previous owner did help certainly but Kenzi did a large part of the work on her own.

It is also worth noting that Kenzi is hailed on the website for Lost Girl as a ‘female Sherlock Holmes’. She does have impressive deductive skills of her own, as shown in “Faetal Attraction” (S01E04) where a lucky coin belonging to Trick goes missing just before he is supposed to return it to the friend who helped him discover it. The penalty for this would force Trick to give up his bar and livelihood. He requests Kenzi’s assistance in figuring out where it is and she manages to figure out that the friend who aided in the discovery is the culprit by the petals of boutonniere he wears.

independent - Kenzi has been on her own since she was fifteen and fiercely loves her independence. When she ran away from home she lived on the streets and in the underground for an unknown amount of time but what we do know is this: she never went back home, and never entered the foster care system. Kenzi resents being called Bo’s pet or simply Bo’s human when it isn’t meant to keep her from being killed and will correct every such statement even if the Fae in question doesn’t listen.

cooperative - Kenzi makes it known if she dislikes someone and will happily insult them until they turn blue in the face. However, if she is required to work with them to a common goal of her friends, Kenzi will do as asked. Though with no small amount of bellyaching on the subject. She also does extensive grunt work for the “paranormal investigation” services that she and Bo run between the two of them, often going undercover and doing the bulk of the unraveling while Bo is more of a direct detective.

communicative - Kenzi is a liar and a thief but she is one of the most honest characters in the TV show (I don’t know what this says about the rest of them). She makes her opinions known and prefers to be told the truth to anything else. It is only when people ask her to keep secrets that she doesn’t tell others things. When it comes to strangers or delicate situations Kenzi is a consumate liar but with the Fae they can sniff out a lie most of the time. Can’t blam a girl for trying though.

weaknesses
rude, tactless - Kenzi may be a good friend but she is typically crass and impolite, even to her friends. There are countless times in each episode where Kenzi will say offensive things and make digs that are too personal with the blandness of styrofoam. Even when things are dire and serious she still finds time to be a jerk. Bo’s first impression of Kenzi is beautifully stated when she tells Kenzi point-blank, “You’re a tool.”

perverse - It isn’t a large part of her character but Kenzi isn’t shy about being the perverted one in the group. She will happily spank people, make lewd comments about how people look and their bodies and make sexual overtures more often than not. She does, however, have realistic limits in this, though it may appear as a defense mechanism, just like her sarcasm.

self-interested - As someone who is a criminal in practice and thought - and someone who is in deep with the underbelly of society, Kenzi’s interested in the well-being of one person: herself. She states many times that she doesn’t do charity work or work, period. She avoids doing things the legal way simply because, for her, crime is easier. And more fun for her. She will think about getting paid before offering to help some poor stranger exorcise their allegedly possessed cat, and even then the legitimacy of what she is doing matters very little to her. It’s all about the Benjamins, baby.

unwilling to share - Where her friends are concerned, Kenzi is very possessive. When it comes to people infringing on her ‘Bo time’ she is angry and irritable until the situation has resolved itself. For instance, when Bo begins to date a Dark Fae who, as of this point, hadn’t done anything to anger Bo or make the relationship a hardship Kenzi is concerned he’s taking too much of her attention and time up. Other Fae pick up on this unwillingness to share, and mock her for it. Specifically the Morrigan in Table for Fae (S02E15,E16) when she tries to save her boyfriend’s life by guaranteeing that he won’t get a music contract that could have made his dreams come true. Kenzi does not deny that this might be selfish of her.

afraid of being replaced - Kenzi does not hide this weakness very well and it is almost constantly exploited by the Fae enemies she collects. It makes it particularly easy for a crazed kitsune to use their glamour to take Kenzi’s place and convince her friends that they are Kenzi for an unknown amount of time.

Waking up felt...wrong. Not like she'd expect for heaven - or the equivalent thereof for the warrior type - to feel. Was the big feasting table in the sky supposed to greet you with a massive hangover? Kenzi didn't know if that was right or not, but as she cracked an eye open her stomach dropped into her feet and she sucked in a shaky breath. Kenzi didn't want to get up because that would be like admitting this was actually happening.

This wasn't right. Wherever she was, this place wasn't right.

"Hello?" Her voice croaked out, sounding like a smoker and a frog had a baby. Guess dying did that to some people.

No answer. What the hell? Tamsin should have brought her straight to Valhalla, right? Did Kenzi do something to fuck it up? Did Tamsin? Maybe Kenzi wasn't worthy or something and Tamsin couldn't tell her ... or something.

"Tam-tam?" Now she just sounded like a scared little girl.

In a way she was. Kenzi missed Hale so much and there was the creeping doubt that she'd never get to see him again sliding up her throat, making her eyes water and her chin tremble.

Maybe this was some kind of test? To prove she was a warrior? Worthy of Valhalla and not sent directly to Lame-halla, or wherever normal people went?

"Okay," deep breath in, deep breath out. "Okay, okay, okay." You can do this Kenz. You can do this. You have to do this. For Bo. For Dyson. Tamsin. Trick. Even Vex, the little fucker.

For Hale.

"I can do this."

Feeling weak as a newborn kitten, Kenzi shuddered up to her knees. Then to her feet where she patted the dust off her clothes, while looking about - curiosity taking over where fear had been.

She started walking. And to fight the potential aloneness that could cripple her into a weeping little human ball, Kenzi started humming. Just a little thing, something a fish had sung in a kids movie or something.

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...
